How many people live on Sark?

A few hundred people live on Sark throughout the year.

The exact number is less useful than the scale. Chief Pleas’ most recent census, in 2022, counted 562 residents, the island’s first census in fifty years. From Easter to October, seasonal workers and visitors increase the number of people on the island considerably.

Sark is therefore not one fixed population, but a winter population, a working summer population and a daily tide of people arriving and leaving by boat.

What a population this small has to sustain

Sark is a working community with shops, places to eat, accommodation, a school, medical provision, island government and the practical services needed to keep people living here throughout the year.

Those functions are supported by a population smaller than many urban neighbourhoods.

That is the surprising part of the number: a few hundred people are not merely living on Sark; they are keeping an island working.

The population changes with the season

In the busier months, the seasonal population rises to around one thousand as accommodation opens, seasonal staff arrive and more visitors are on the island.

What visitors notice

On Sark, the same small community runs the shops, accommodation, transport, public services and much of the island’s visitor life. The island does not disappear behind a tourism operation.

You are visiting somewhere inhabited, governed and maintained by a few hundred people who are very welcoming.

That gives ordinary encounters more weight. A shop, a carriage, a harbour worker or a community notice is not a piece of staging. It belongs to the machinery of island life.

Small but still dynamic

A population of a few hundred can sound as though nothing changes.

The opposite is true.

Chief Pleas’ own census figures show the total has barely moved in a century and a half: 525 people in 1871, 615 in 1921, 481 during the German occupation in 1941, 493 in 1971, and 562 at the last count in 2022.

The number shifts through the seasons. Businesses open and close. Workers arrive and leave. Visitors briefly increase the population. Residents still have to make decisions about housing, services, transport and the future of the island.

Sark’s small population does not make it simple; it makes each person, business and service more visible.

So, how many people live on Sark?

In season, the number of people on the island can rise to around one thousand once seasonal workers and visitors are included.

The important fact is that so few people sustain a complete island community, and that visitors are able to see that community at work.
