Can you stay on Sark?

Yes.

Sark has hotels, guest houses, self-catering properties, camping and glamping. You can come for a night, a weekend or longer.

In fact, staying overnight gives you a different relationship with the island.

What changes when you stay

Sark became the world’s first Dark Sky Island in 2011. There is no street lighting anywhere on the island, so once daylight goes, the lanes are lit by the moon and the sky.

Ordinary evening light, even indoors, is enough to suppress melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it is time to sleep. On Sark, after dark, there is nothing to fight it. Guests are often surprised by how deeply they sleep, sometimes from the first night.

Where can you stay?

The official Sark accommodation list includes hotels, bed and breakfasts, guest houses, self-catering homes, camping and glamping.

The right choice depends on the kind of stay you want.

A hotel or guest house gives you a base with people around you. Self-catering gives you more independence. Camping puts more of the island’s weather and darkness directly outside the door. A retreat gives the stay a structure, with the island experienced as part of a shared week rather than simply as somewhere to sleep.

What happens to your luggage?

At the Sark end of the crossing, you do not carry your suitcase up the steep hill from the harbour.

Sark Shipping lifts the luggage from the boat and passes it to the island carters, who deliver it to wherever you are staying.

You can take the toast rack up from the harbour or walk. Your bags follow separately.

It is a small practical detail, but it changes the arrival. You step onto the island without immediately having to manage the rest of the journey.

Is Sark off grid?

No.

There is mobile signal and wifi on Sark. You can contact home, check a booking or answer something urgent.

On Sark you still have the option to connect, but there is less pulling you back to a screen: no street lighting after dark, and no traffic to watch for, since Sark is car-free for residents and visitors alike.

Is one night enough?

Our signature retreats run five nights, all inclusive, long enough for the island to properly change your pace.

A day on Sark can be memorable, but a stay lets it become more than a day out.
